Movie talk: Aladdin, 2020

USING MOVIES TO TALK TO YOUR KIDS

Rachel Goss, 04.22.21 / Education, Movie Talk

Synopsis:

Aladdin, a poor street thief, lives in the city of Agrabah. Aladdin must steal from the marketplace in order to survive. Fortunately for him, one day in the market he befriends Princess Jasmine.

The Sultan (ruler) is Princess Jasmine’s father. Second in command is Jafar, who hatches a plan to overrule the kingdom. To do so, he needs to retrieve a magic lamp. He runs into a problem and cannot retrieve the lamp himself. Jafar convinces Aladdin to retrieve the lamp hidden in a cave by promising him wealth.

Aladdin agrees to Jafar’s evil plan and ends up stranded in the cave. There, Aladdin meets Genie who lives inside the magic lamp Jafar so badly wanted.

Through a Genie’s three wishes Aladdin finds himself able to be freed from the Cave of Wonders. Aladdin uses the other two wishes in a way that reveals his destiny.

Questions:

1. Aladdin steals to eat and helps the poor by doing so, is it okay to steal when you know someone is starving? Stealing isn’t legal, but should we allow it in order to help someone else? What do you think?

2. Not everyone has a Genie who can grant them three wishes, though it would be nice! If you could have a genie grant you three wishes, any three wishes, what would they be and why?

3. When Aladdin and Jasmine meet, there is an instant spark, almost like love at first sight. Do you believe you could fall in love with someone at first sight? Why or why not? Have you met someone, maybe a new friend, and known immediately you were meant to be friends? Who was it?
